1. Prize Youth, 2021
Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

I am Wong Wai Chun from Hong Kong, a Year 2 student at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. I major in Mathematics and I am planning to minor in Computer Science.
Why are you interested in mathematics?
When I was a kid, I liked to do calculations. There are many aspects in daily life that basic computation is really useful. However, I realized later that mathematics is not only calculations, and I started to appreciate the more abstract side of mathematics. It is truly amazing to me that how mathematics is built entirely from just a handful of axioms and postulates.
What is your favourite aspect of mathematics?
I especially like the generalized Stokes' theorem. It is so concise, yet it generalizes so much in calculus. I like how this theorem implies Green's theorem, Stokes' theorem, and divergence theorem, but looks more compact than each of them.
Do you think you have gained something from IYMC?
Yes. In the pre-final round, the reading article features some number theory that I have not seen before. This gave me a wider view of mathematics and this increased my curiosity in the field of number theory.

First of all, there Is no reason to be not interested in mathematics. Mathematics Is intricately intertwined with our quotidian lives. The moment one is born, he/she Is assigned his/her Date and Time of Birth which Is nothing but the mathematical measurement of the time elapsed till my birth since J200 (the commonly used epoch). Mathematics helps bring order In the chaos and select the frequency of music in the noise. Also, mathematics has given the world the most important tool to survive, grow, and thrive.
What is your favorite math equation?
The most beautiful equation in the world of mathematics: e^(iπ) + 1 = 0 (Euler’s Identity, also known as Euler’s Equation) The reason I quoted Euler's Identity is that it is my favorite math fact!! This equation profoundly connects the real with the imaginary and the rational with the irrational. Euler’s Identity is the epitome of the existence of a beautiful connection between seemingly unrelated and distant things.
What are your hobbies besides mathematics and science?
I have varied hobbies besides mathematics and sciences. I started drawing at the mere age of 4 years and I still practice drawing and painting. I am well-versed in Pastel color, Watercolor, and Pencil Sketching. I aspire to learn oil painting in the near future.
